Barefoot Through Exam Stress: My Free Spa Moment in the Rain

Student life can be exhausting: deadlines, exam periods, keeping your furnished STUWO shared room tidy, and managing a student budget that often does not leave much room for expensive extras. When stress levels rise, we often look for the perfect way to unwind. But instead of spending money on costly wellness experiences or spa visits, I discovered something that is completely free, surprisingly healthy, and available right outside the door: mindful barefoot walking.

This evening, it happened again. I was walking my dog when the first raindrops began to fall. It was a warm May evening, and instead of being annoyed by the rain or going back to get a jacket, I decided to continue — barefoot. The raindrops on my skin did not bother me at all. Quite the opposite.

Mindfulness With Every Step

Walking barefoot requires attention. I consciously tried to maintain a healthy posture: no hollow back, my chin slightly tucked in, and my feet placed carefully with each step, rolling gently from heel to toe. Exactly as my doctor had recommended.

Because walking without shoes automatically makes me slow down and move more mindfully in order not to hurt myself, something surprising happened: I felt my whole body begin to calm down. When you are focused on the ground beneath your feet, racing thoughts suddenly fade into the background.

Seeing and Feeling the Little Things

My attention shifted to the small details along the path. I noticed beautiful little purple flowers that made me genuinely happy — I almost wished I had them back home in my shared room.

When the paved road turned into a gravel path, I had to make my steps even smaller. The tiny prickles against the soles of my bare feet felt like an intense, natural foot massage. The air smelled fresh from the light rain, no one else was outside, and for a moment, the world felt like it belonged only to me. I even came across a few sheep; the young lambs were jumping around joyfully. Nature can be so carefree and beautiful.

Grounded in the Here and Now

Walking barefoot makes me feel incredibly grounded and deeply connected to the here and now. All my senses become more awake: I feel the ground beneath my feet, hear the rain, notice the fresh air, and smell that special scent that appears after rainfall. It fascinates me how something so simple can feel so valuable — and how soothing a few mindful steps in nature can be.

My Relaxation Tip for Students on a Small Budget

I can warmly recommend a barefoot walk to every student, especially those dealing with a tight budget and a lot of stress. And believe me: in the rain, the experience becomes even more intense and freeing. My personal insider tip? On a warm summer rain evening, go out in light clothes — or, if it really pours and the temperature is right, even in swimwear. Try it. I promise, you might be surprised by how good it feels.
